Douglas Oakes, 81, passed away Tuesday morning, March 17, 2020 at Roxboro Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born in Pittsylvania County, VA, he was the son of the late Delbert “D.T.” Taft Oakes and Annie Vera Haskins Oakes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son Timothy “Tim” Oakes; his brother, Randel Oakes; and his sister, Linda Walker. Doug was known for working on tractors, which was his natural calling in life. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman. He once killed a bear during a hunting trip to Canada. And with the fish that he would catch near home, he loved having fish frys and would invite all his family, friends and neighbors. One of his favorite past times was going to auctions. Anything from farm sales, antiques, estate sales or livestock, he enjoyed them all, if for no other reason than to be able to talk and fellowship with everyone.

Doug is survived by his loving wife of nearly 55 years, Dorothy “Dot” Pleasant Oakes of Roxboro; daughter in-law, Tonja Oakes of Danville, VA; two grandchildren, Robbie Oakes of Danville, VA and Xandi Lancaster and husband Nathan of Danville, VA; two brothers, Tony Oakes and wife Peggy of Dry Fork, VA and Jerry Oakes and wife Shelia of Pelham; six sisters, Ruby Barker of Semora, Mary Goodson and husband Frankie of Virginia Beach, VA, Barbara Salmons and husband Archie of Cascade, VA, Nancy Greenlaw and husband Brian of Virginia Beach, VA, Catherine Stergion and husband Pete of Virginia Beach, VA, and Joan Walden of Danville, VA.

Memorial Services will be held at Leasburg United Methodist Church. The date of the service will be announced at a later date and is currently postponed due to the restrictions on public gatherings related to the COVID-19 virus.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Leasburg Community Cemetery c/o Mrs. Hilda Holt, 8978 Leasburg Rd., Leasburg, NC 27291.

Doug, was a wonderful person . He was known for handing out his coins . Was a great help building Leasburg Vol. Fire Department...can hear him now when a vechicle would blow the horn he would always say "GO AHEAD I GOT A RIDE", we all got a bit kick out of that.He will be missed by all that knew him. Dot, take care and God Bless you,

Lou Slade
